Prologue

January 2010

While surfing the web, I came across the site of Mark Moxon. He had been backpacking around the world at the same time as I was. In fact, we were in Bangkok at the same time, although we never met. His writing is very enjoyable, and he makes many of the same observations that I made on my journey.

Last summer, Mark invented something called Tubewalking. It is where you walk on the surface, following the route of the subway, or the tube, as they say in London, where Mark is based. Mark took three months to walk all the subway lines in London.

I thought to myself, I could do that in Toronto in three days. Since I'm getting laid off at the end of January, I decided this would be the perfect time to do it.

I've decided to actually do it in five days, over the course of five weeks, so I won't be overwhelmed when it comes to writing up this journal. I will break the Yonge-University-Spadina line into the Yonge section and the University-Spadina section, and the Bloor-Danforth line into the Bloor section and the Danforth section. The Sheppard line is so short it doesn't need breaking up.

Mark's Tubewalking journal is one of discovery. Since I've been on and off the subway many times at all of the stations except Downsview and the Sheppard line, I suspect my journal will be more one of nostalgia.
