Day 3

Standish-Hickey State Park to MacKerricher Beach State Park

40.7 Miles

When I got up in the morning there was another tent. Scott, a twenty year old student from UCSB had arrived on the bus at 5:00.

Joshua and I headed out for the infamous Legget Hill. It's the highest hill on the entire west coast cycle route. It actually wasn't bad. We chatted the whole way up. There was construction, where we had to wait for thirteen minutes. The flagman said we had just missed Ken and Phillip.

Then it was all downhill. It was amazing. We flew down, leaning hard into corners. It went for miles. I got stuck behind a motorcycle, having to break for it. Finally she waved me past. I almost caught the second motorcycle, but then it flattened out a bit.

Shortly after that Scott caught up. We rode to Westport, where Ken and Phillip were stopped at a store. There was also a Swiss couple there.

From there we rode past the campground to Fort Bragg. Joshua, Ken, Phillip and I stopped at a restaurant for lunch. Then they continued on. I looked for a grocery store. I found one, but there were a couple of drifters out front. But I went to the post office across the street. Then I went for ice cream. Then I rode around until I found a small grocery store. There were a bunch of kids hanging around, and one small kid offered to watch my bike.

Then I bought a postcard, and rode back to MacKerricher State Park. Scott was already there. I showered and made dinner. A couple of guys rolled in. One was flying the Canadian flag. I said, "A fellow Canuck." The guy didn't understand what I was saying. Turns out they were German. The guy just really liked Canada. They had started in Toronto. The one guy couldn't decide if he would go as far as Peru or Chile. Then he would fly to New Zealand.

Cyclist at sunset

I walked down to the beach to get pictures of the sunset. Saw a couple of seals.

When I got back, two more guys had arrived. Josh and Sam, from DC.
