Day 4

August 7, 2003

Fucine, Italy to Ora, Italy

78 Kilometres

Thursday turned out to be the easiest day of the trip. Downhill almost all the way. It was a fast downhill to Dimaro, and then a gentler downhill until we got to a fork in the road. Then we started climbing up to Cles. There were rocks beside the road to hold the hill back, and wire to hold back the rocks. A piece of wire was sticking out, and it caught my front pannier, and I went down. I banged my knee, but otherwise was okay.

In Cles we stopped to pick up food, and get campground information. Then it was more downhill. Then the climb over the hills to get to the north/south road turned out to be nothing. After that it was all downhill.

We got to S. Michele all'Adige. Again it was getting very hot. We went to a museum, hoping we could eat lunch in their courtyard, but they were locking their doors for the afternoon. But a block away we found a little park with picnic tables, where we had lunch and slept.

CastleAfter that we were riding up the road, when I saw a bike path sign, so we took that. The bike path was along the river, passing by apple orchards. We tried to find gelato, but were unsuccessful.

We arrived in Ora. There were two campgrounds in town. I figured one was up the mountain, so we went to the other. It was a hotel as well as a campground. And it had a pool. And we even had time to swim and read by the pool. A woman cycle tourist arrived. She was from Germany, and she was headed to Turkey.
